S14 vs S15 — Drift Build Comparison (2026)
The S14 is cheaper. The S15 is rarer and federally illegal in many states until 2024. Which one belongs in your garage?
You can spot S14 vs S15 owners by the argument they’re willing to have at 2 a.m. Both share the same SR20DET-era Nissan DNA, both drift beautifully, but the build paths diverge sharply once you start writing checks.
Specs at a glance
- S14 (1995–1998): 2.0L SR20DET (Kouki) or KA24DE (US-spec), 5-speed manual, 2,800 lb, US-legal everywhere
- S15 (1999–2002): 2.0L SR20DET (factory turbo, helical LSD, 6-speed), 2,900 lb, only US-legal as 25-year imports starting 2024
Acquisition cost
A clean US-market S14 in 2026 trades for $7,000–$11,000. A US-imported S15 (now legal under the 25-year rule for 1999 cars) starts at $25,000 and goes up fast for clean Spec-R examples. The cost gap is roughly 3×.
Parts availability
S14: deepest aftermarket of any drift chassis. Every body panel, suspension arm, mount, and bracket is reproduced. S15: 80% parts shared with S14 (suspension geometry is the same), but interior trim, factory aero, and Spec-R-specific items have to come from Japan.
Engine bay
The S14 ships with KA24DE (2.4L NA inline-four) in the US — most builds either turbo the KA, swap an SR20DET, or go LS. The S15 came factory with SR20DET — saves you the swap budget. Both engine bays accept 1JZ, 2JZ, RB25, RB26, and LS swaps with documented kits.
The verdict
If your goal is "drift a Silvia," buy an S14 and swap whatever motor you want. The 3× cost difference buys a full build instead of a clean title. If your goal is "own an S15," save up — the chassis is worth what people pay for it, and JDM imports only get rarer.
Frequently Asked
Is the S15 legal in the US?
Yes — starting in 2024, S15s built in 1999 became legal under the 25-year import exemption. By 2027 every model year (1999–2002) will be legal.
How much horsepower does a stock S15 SR20DET make?
Factory rated at 247 hp (Spec-R), realistically 220 hp at the wheels stock. Mild bolt-ons (intake, exhaust, boost controller) push that to 280–300 reliably.
Will S14 suspension fit an S15?
Yes. Subframes, suspension arms, control arms, coilovers, and angle kits are interchangeable. The S15 has a slightly different rear subframe mounting but most aftermarket parts account for it.
