How to Install BC Racing Coilovers — Step-by-Step

A complete BC Racing BR-Series install on an S14 / E46 / FD chassis. Tools, torque specs, alignment notes, and the four mistakes that ruin coilovers.

DRAFTThis guide is technically reviewed but pending editorial polish.

BC Racing BR-Series coilovers are the best-selling drift-ready coilover in the US under $1,200 — for the same reason Honda Civics outsell BMWs: they work, they last, and the spring rates are sensible out of the box. This guide walks through a complete install. Same procedure applies to S13/S14/S15, E36/E46, FD3S, and any other strut-style chassis. Solid-axle rears (Mustang, Foxbody) have a different rear-shock procedure noted in the chassis-specific BC manual.

Tools you actually need

  • Floor jack rated for 2 tons + four jack stands
  • 17, 19, 22 mm sockets + breaker bar
  • Spring compressor (rent from AutoZone if you don’t own one)
  • Strut nut tool (chassis-specific; $25–40)
  • Torque wrench to 110 lb-ft
  • Penetrating oil (PB Blaster) sprayed 24 hr before the job

Step 1: Set ride height before you install

BC ships coilovers fully-extended. Drop them to your target ride height on the bench using a tape measure (perch-to-perch distance) — do not try to set ride height with the car on the ground. You’ll save 90 minutes per corner.

Step 2: Front strut removal

Loosen the top strut nut on the strut tower while the wheel is still on the ground (this gives you leverage). Then jack the car, pull the wheel, disconnect the brake line bracket and ABS sensor, separate the strut from the knuckle (two bolts on most chassis), and lift the assembly out from below.

Step 3: Rear shock removal (strut chassis)

Rear is usually faster. Remove the rear seat or trunk panel to access the upper mount, jack the lower control arm to compress the shock, remove the lower bolt, then drop the assembly. On S14 / E46 the upper mount sits inside the trunk—keep the upper hat bolts torqued to spec or the shock will rattle.

Step 4: Damper adjustment

BC dampers are 30-click. For a daily-driven drift car, start at 8 clicks from full-soft front, 12 clicks from full-soft rear. Adjust after the first track day, not before.

Step 5: Alignment is non-negotiable

Get an alignment within 24 hours of finishing the install. New coilovers change camber, caster, and toe immediately. For a drift setup, ask for: front -3° camber, +6° caster, 0 toe; rear -1.5° camber, 0 toe. Adjust from there based on tire wear pattern.

Four mistakes that ruin coilovers

  1. Setting ride height too low — you’ll bottom out the damper internally and kill it in 20 hours of use.
  2. Skipping the alignment — your tires will be ruined in a weekend.
  3. Over-tightening the spring perch — cracks the perch within a season.
  4. Mixing damper clicks side-to-side — the car will pull under braking.

Frequently Asked

How long does a BC Racing coilover install take?

For a first-time DIY install on a strut-style chassis (S14, E46, FD), budget 6–8 hours. Experienced installers do it in 4. Add 1–2 hours for solid-rear-axle cars.

Do I need an alignment after installing coilovers?

Yes, always. New coilovers change every alignment parameter. Driving on the old alignment will destroy a set of tires inside a week.

What spring rate is best for drifting?

For a 2,800–3,000 lb chassis like the S14 or E46: front 8–10 kg/mm, rear 6–7 kg/mm. BC BR-Series ships in this range from the factory for those applications.
